We talk radon awareness all the time, and sometimes it can start to feel as though we’re saying the same thing time and again.  Radon awareness is slowly growing, but for too many Canadians radon fails to register as a threat.  To those of us in the radon industry, apathy in the face of this known carcinogen is both puzzling and frustrating, especially when taking action on radon is simple and affordable. 

The question is: How do We Motive People to Action?

Those who attended the 2017 CARST Conference in Banff may remember Dr. Anne-Marie Nicol’s presentation on this topic.  This month, she revisits her presentation in the form of a webinar.  As she says, the science is clear and compelling – the risk from radon is very real. Yet even among those Canadians who’ve heard of radon, few have tested their homes, and even fewer have mitigated when those tests have come back high. Join Dr. Nicol this January 25^th at 12:00 EST to better understand the psychology behind risk evaluation, and how we can use psychological insight to move people to act.

Our Annual Conference (#CARST2018) is shaping up nicely, with topics ranging from practical applications and changing standards to municipal action and policy.  Every year we’re amazed by the quality work and research that is going on across the country and are excited by the quality speakers who come forward to present.   This year’s conference will include updates on the latest research, tips from the most experienced radon experts and a great opportunity to network with other radon professionals.  Radon is a growing industry in Canada, and we continue to enjoy an upbeat enthusiastic atmosphere at our conference.  Join us April 22-24 in Ottawa!

C-NRPP Update

Reminder to all C-NRPP Professionals: at least 4 credits of C-NRPP approved courses are required as part of your renewal!  C-NRPP’s Professional Practice Credits are designed to encourage work in radon outreach and awareness; therefore you can obtain credits for doing presentations on radon and going to trade shows.  C-NRPP also recognizes that Canadian radon professionals are cross-trained, and have to complete course work for their other certifications, therefore you can also obtain credits for taking other (non-radon) professional development courses.  If you’re looking for radon-specific training, C-NRPP offers online courses throughout the year, and in-person training during our pre-conference Saturday Field Trip and Sunday CE Course day.

We wanted to let all our contacts know that the draft version of CAN/CGSB-149.11—Radon control options for new construction in low rise residential buildings 91.040.30 is available for a second public review period lasting 30 days. If you'd like to review the document in order to submit any comments to the CGSB (Canadian Governmental Standards Board), we've attached a pdf copy here.  CGSB-149.11-2015CD-01.pdf

We also wanted to let all CARST Members and C-NRPP Professionals know about the approval of the CGSB Standard for existing construction, CAN/CGSB-149.12-2015 CBD-01 - Radon mitigation options for existing low rise residential buildings.  After a couple of years and many hours of work by various industry stakeholders including Health Canada, CHBA, and C-NRPP professionals, we have received notice from Health Canada that it has been accepted by CGSB.  We anticipate the final document will be available free for professionals on the CGSB website.  Once it is posted, we will notify you of the location. 

All C-NRPP professionals should be familiar with this document and its requirements.  The C-NRPP Policy Advisory Board will be discussing the implementation and developing tools for C-NRPP professionals to meet the requirements and recommendations. This will be communicated to professionals shortly and will include a webinar to review the document and newly implemented C-NRPP requirements.  We will also have resources available such as mitigation labels, and a homeowner information package to help you with meeting the recommendations of the standard.

Décembre est déjà là, et avec la saison des fêtes et la fin de l’année qui approchent, nous avons toujours envie de faire un retour sur les 12 derniers mois. Nous sommes nombreux à apprécier le changement de rythme qui vient avec le temps des fêtes. Pourquoi ne pas profiter de ce temps de repos pour rattraper les développements sur le radon que vous pourriez avoir manqué?

L’ACSTR a commencé 2017 en grand avec les préparatifs pour le congrès. Les gens qui ont participé au congrès à Banff en avril savent qu’il s’agissait là d’un événement inoubliable. Des paysages majestueux, des mets succulents, des présentations captivantes et bien évidemment, les Olympiques du radon! Le congrès 2017 de l’ACSTR proposait également pour la première fois une sortie sur le terrain, un ajout incroyablement populaire. Une telle sortie sera également à l’horaire en 2018 à Ottawa. 

2017 comprend également la création du prix Reconnaissance Arthur G. Scott, remis au Dr Dana Schmidt pour son travail à Castelgar, en Colombie-Britannique, qui comprend militantisme et travail acharné afin d’engager le changement au niveau municipal et provincial. Le Dr Schmidt constitue un exemple remarquable pour toutes ces personnes dont la vie a été affectée par le radon, qui travaillent avec passion comme militants et voix du changement.

Les mois de l’été ont apporté de nombreux changements au sein de l’ACSTR. Il s’agissait premièrement de l’intégration de tous les professionnels du PNCR-C comme membres de l’ACSTR et le début de la synchronisation des dates d’expiration au 1^er juillet. L’adhésion à l’ACSTR offre de nombreux avantages à tous les professionnels du radon, et l’ACSTR devient plus forte avec chaque membre qui s’ajoute.

Avec l’été commençait aussi la série des webinaires mensuels de l’ACSTR. Le premier sujet en août sur les réseaux sociaux s’est avéré fort populaire. Nous avons ensuite parlé de sensibilisation au radon, du programme de garantie habitation de Tarion et avons fait le point sur les actions d’un océan à l’autre pendant le mois de la sensibilisation au radon. Notre premier webinaire en français s’est tenu en novembre, avec un survol des initiatives au Québec. Vous pouvez écouter tous les webinaires sur le site Internet de l’ACSTR.

En parlant du site Internet, il a connu une métamorphose cette année! Notre site s’avère une mine d’or autant pour les propriétaires de maison que les professionnels, avec toutes ses ressources en lien avec le radon. Vous ignorez par où commencer? À travers l’année, l’ACSTR a lancé avec succès plusieurs nouvelles campagnes de sensibilisation du public. La campagne Démasquer les visages du cancer du poumon donne une voix aux personnes affectées par le cancer du poumon en leur permettant de partager leur histoire. Le concours Atténuation du radon à la maison, offert en partenariat avec le groupe Occupe-toi du Radon, vise à encourager les propriétaires à effectuer l’atténuation du radon chez eux en leur offrant la chance de gagner 1000 $ applicable sur le coût d’un système d’atténuation. Finalement, spécialement pour les membres de l’ACSTR, nous proposons le concours photo sur la sensibilisation au radon! Envoyez-nous une photo de votre initiative ou activité de promotion en lien avec la sensibilisation au radon entre novembre 2017 et janvier 2018 et courez la chance de remporter une inscription GRATUITE au congrès 2018 de l’ACSTR! December is here, and with the approaching holiday season and year’s end comes a natural tendency to reflect on the past 12 months.  Many of us enjoy a change of pace over the holidays, so why not use some of that well-deserved downtime to catch up on any radon developments you may have missed?

CARST rang in 2017 with Conference preparations in full swing. For all those who joined us in Banff in April, it was a conference that will not soon be forgotten.  Beautiful surroundings, delicious food, engaging presentations, and of course – the Radon Olympics!  CARST 2017 also saw the introduction of a Conference field trip; a hugely popular addition to the Program that will be repeated this year in Ottawa. 

2017 also saw the creation of the Arthur G. Scott Achievement Award, presented in its inaugural year to Dr. Dana Schmidt of Castelgar, British Columbia for his radon advocacy and tireless work to enact change at the municipal and provincial level. Dr. Schmidt is an outstanding example of the many people whose lives have been affected by radon, who work so passionately as advocates and voices for change.

The summer months brought several changes to CARST. The first was the inclusion of all C-NRPP professionals as CARST members and the start of aligning expiry dates to July 1. Membership with CARST offers many advantages to all radon professionals, and CARST grows stronger with each new member.

Summer also marked the beginning of CARST’s Monthly Webinar series.  The webinars got off to a great start in August on the topic of Social Media. Since then we’ve covered Radon Awareness, the Tarion Home Warranty Program, and checked-in coast to coast for Radon Action Month. Our first French webinar took place in November, with a special focus on Quebec initiatives. You can catch up on all our webinars on the CARST website.

Speaking of the CARST website, it got a whole new look this year! Our website is a gold mine of radon-related resources for homeowners and professionals alike.  Not sure where to start? Our December webinar is our gift to you: access it on-demand for a comprehensive tour of the new CARST website, including the members-only section. Who knows what else you might be missing?

Throughout the year CARST has proudly launched several new public awareness campaigns. Unmasking the Faces of Lung Cancer  offers those affected by lung cancer a place to share their story. The Radon Reduction Sweepstakes, offered in partnership with Take Action on Radon, aims to encourage homeowners to mitigate their homes by offering them the chance to win $1000 off the cost of their mitigation system. Finally, just for CARST members, we’ve got the Radon Awareness Photo Contest! Send us a picture of your radon awareness initiative or promotion from November 2017 through January 2018 and you’ll be entered into the draw to win a FREE Conference registration for CARST 2018! Deadline is January 31, so don’t delay!

Nous aimerions prendre le temps de rendre hommage à un autre champion du radon : le docteur Jack Cornett. Jack a contribué à la recherche sur le radon pendant toute sa carrière et a joué un rôle clé dans l’établissement du programme nationale sur le radon. Universitaire occupé et respecté, Jack a pris le temps de militer pour la mesure et l’atténuation du radon. Il a même paru dans une vidéo de sensibilisation du public accessible sur YouTube. Aimé par sa famille et ses amis, Jack était un atout pour la communauté du radon et un homme merveilleux qui nous manquera à tous.

Novembre est arrivé, et pour nous tous au sein de la communauté du radon, c’est un moment bien spécial : le mois de la sensibilisation au radon. Partout à travers le pays, les initiatives sur la sensibilisation au radon prennent leur envol ou gagnent de la vitesse. Des rencontres d’informations et des forums en passant par les démarches auprès des municipalités et les programmes incitatifs, sans oublier notre concours sur la réduction du radon, c’est dire que le mois mondial contre le radon bat son plein.

Nous sommes déjà impressionnés par certaines des publicités que nous avons vues provenant de nos membres de l’ACSTR. Puisque nous voulons encourager ces initiatives et inspirer tous les membres, nous voudrions récompenser les membres de l’ACSTR qui font connaître le radon, en leur donnant la chance de gagner une inscription gratuite au congrès 2018 de l’ACSTR. Vous avez installé un tableau d’affichage, épinglé un article, donné des brochures ou présenté un kiosque? ACSTR 2018 – N’attendez pas, inscrivez-vous! Nous voulons nous assurer que vous réserverez du temps dans votre agenda pour le congrès. Pour ce 7^e congrès, nous vous garantissons un événement inoubliable. Soyez des nôtres à Ottawa du 22 au 24 avril pour le congrès 2018 qui s’intitule Une approche élémentaire : le radon et la Terre, l’Air et l’Eau.  Inscrivez-vous rapidement à la sortie sur le terrain. Cette année, la sortie nous mènera vers le campus du National Research Council pour constater le travail effectué dans les maisons jumelées, la chambre de diffusion, et l’installation RIBIT. Participez à la visite guidée de l’hôpital d’Ottawa pour en apprendre plus sur l’atténuation dans de grands immeubles.

We’d like to take a moment to salute another Radon Champion: Dr. Jack Cornett. Jack contributed to radon research throughout his career, and played a key role in establishing the Canadian National Radon Program.  A busy and respected academic, Jack took the time to advocate on behalf of radon testing and mitigation; even featuring in a public awareness video now available on YouTube. Beloved by family and friends, Jack was an asset to the radon community and a wonderful man who will be sorely missed.

November is here, and to all of us in the radon community that should mean one thing: Radon Action Month!  All across the country, radon awareness initiatives are kicking off or gaining steam.  From information sessions and forums, to municipal outreach and incentive programs, to our very own Radon Reduction Sweepstakes, there is plenty of action in the radon world this month.

We've already been impressed by some of the creative advertising we are seeing coming from our CARST members, therefore, to encourage this and inspire all members, we’d like to reward those CARST members who are taking action with the opportunity to win a FREE CARST 2018 Conference registration.  Have you put up a billboard, penned an article, handed out flyers, or manned a booth?  To enter, simply send us a picture of your radon awareness initiative and your name will go into the draw.  Since the radon season really lasts more than just November, this contest is open to all CARST Members for any promotion through November, December and January.  Entries are open until January 31, 2018.  Send us an email with a link, photo, file of your promotion idea.  Entries are limited to 2 per CARST member, but feel free to share all your ideas with us.
